HEYY
So I should have posted yesterday but I felt pretty crunched for time between going to bed late from the trip, waking up early to go to studio and print for crit today and going out. And I realize now how I hate trying to tell you about yesterday today. It was a fine day, just very busy. I remember how much I dislike the darkroom. Its just too busy and lots of waiting and bleh just not fun (for me anyways). And I ended up only having 8 prints for today (which was alright but not ideal). I did a lot of 4x5 contacts and that was nice. I’ll try and scan all my negs on an easy going day so you can all see them! But yeah I went in and printed for a long while. Then I came back and napped. Which felt great! Well naps are always good, but its was really nice to not have anything to do or feel like I need to be doing something.
It wasn’t until last night that my long day was complete though. And I wont go into detail because its really not that important, and I don’t think most of my readers are interested in drunken metro rides (well I know some of you are, but you’ll just have to ask me ;). Anyways we drank, Absinthe, or the closest thing to an absinthe knockoff that sells for 13 euro. Ummmmmmmm wouldn’t do it again. Just a sloppy night. But that’s cool, I guess. Anyways woke up this morning with the worstttt headache ive had in a LONGGG time. Like had it for a good half day, all through crit and lunch.
Anyways, Crit went really well. It wasn’t a very serious crit so I knew it would mostly be technical stuff and I felt pretty good. It was great to see everyone’s work too! Some people have really been making cool work! Ive decided that I really enjoy film – but only kinda. I mean I knew that before, but Im going to try and shoot film for next Fridays crit. And then have the work from this blog and the blog itself as my final project. I was talking to Bret and he said he found a old camera shop where they are selling older medium format cameras for really cheap. I might go and try and pick one up. I really loved shooting the square format. And the prints are so crisp and clean that I could def use that. Other than that we had a long lunch hour followed by a short demo on digital printing at SPEOS.
Ok OK OK OKKKK I know I ranted about the whole printer situation already but it gets better! SO I knew they HAD a printer (Just one) But I didn’t know anything about it. OK so it’s a printer called a “Spectro” I think (I’ll take pictures on Monday of it) But it’s a ancient water DI ink based printer. From what I gather it uses a laser to expose paper and then uses water and inks to do something. Like I don’t understand what happens. Its about 15 years old – HI-Tech of the mid 90s but this thing is like WTF. It only prints on glossy paper. Its running off of a mac that’s from like 1994. Its connected by a scuzy cable. It only prints a specific resolutions. It’s a wacky little machine. The prints look good though! But damn its so old and funky. Like OK I really don’t get how a NEW photography school, that teaches the craft of not fine art photography but COMMERCIAL and very boring photography that I might add has several labs of iMacs that are only a year or two old can only be running off of ONE 15 year old printer. I DON’T GET IT. Its just crazy. They also had a dusty Epson R2400 that was in a closet and they had to install drivers on some other computer for us. I might try and do that for my BW prints – just because I can control it more and work in QuadTone Rip, the “spectro” has beautiful color but the BW is gross and tends to be really toned by color inks. But this is all just mind blowing. Im really excited to use this printer but DAMN. I’m not used to looking at my work in glossy but that will be weird, but other than that I guess it will be cool. I can also keep the negative after the print, maybe do something cool with them – who knows!
So yeah, after the printer demo we all went back to FIAP, and I took a nap listened to some KATG and that’s about it. I don’t know what Im up to for tonight, I wouldn’t mind staying in after last night – but I also know I haven’t been going out enough and I need to go have some fun. So if I go out I just wont drink really, I don’t even want to – just take it easy. It’s a good night for that. Whats “Londres” mean? Jackets? Or like snacks. Theres a little table in the lounge with a sign that says “Londres” and an arrow pointing to a table.
Oh so IDK I haven’t figured it out yet. But tomorrow Im trying to go out an do some work. I always get really inspired to work in crit so I wanna go do a bunch of work. Plus Im not posting any pics today and that kind of bums me out, but that’s cool. I haven’t yet decided on my walk for tomorrow – but I think I might check out the left side of the left bank, or at least start over there ☺.
Until tomorrow then!
OH BTW THE PRINTER WAS CALLED "PICTRO" NOT SPECTRO. Just didnt want to go through and edit all of that ;)
Londres = London
